“This is a tragedy for all families in Ukraine.” In an interview with the British television channel Sky News, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, returned to the repercussions of the war on his private life. And more precisely about his relations with his wife, Olena Zelenska, as well as his son Kyrylo (10 years old) and his daughter Oleksandra (18 years old).
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, relations between the Ukrainian president and his children have been limited to the bare minimum, for security reasons. Volodymyr Zelensky is said to have already escaped several Russian-initiated assassination attempts against him, some of which have been prevented thanks to American support.
“For the past three months, it has been once every 10 days”
On the night of February 24, awakened by explosions and incessant calls, Volodymyr Zelensky told Sky News that he had to immediately change his place of residence and leave the presidential palace where he was staying with his wife and children.
“I told my wife, ‘Get ready. Dress our kids, tell them what’s going on and get ready, because it’s not going to be safe,'” he recalled.
Since then, the meetings have been spaced out. “It’s a shame that I only get to see my children once a… In fact, I see them a little more now than since the conflict started. For three months, it is once every 10 days, ”she explained. Volodymyr Zelensky.
During their meetings, the Ukrainian president and his relatives usually share a meal and exchange. “I get to see my daughter a little more often this year because she’s a student now,” he said.
“They even know better than me”
Although she is not usually with her husband, the Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska does not remain in the shadows. Last December she traveled to Paris, where she was received by Brigitte Macron, in order to collect donations for her country, but also to alert international opinion.
His youngest son, Kyrylo, is aware of what is happening in the country his father rules, like all Ukrainian children, Volodymyr Zelensky told Sky News.
“All of our children are adults. All of them. They talk about the war, they talk about when we’re going to win… They know what’s going on. They even know it better than I do, I think,” he said. -he thinks.
He then continues: “It’s a tragedy that they have to talk about this, and don’t be afraid of children. Not football… It’s a huge change for them, but it’s a situation that will soon change, I hope”.
