Five Russians have been stranded at a South Korean airport for 3 months after fleeing the mobilization

The five men fled to escape the partial mobilization announced in September by Vladimir Putin. But South Korea denies them refugee status.

They fled Russia and are now stuck in a South Korean airport. Five Russian men have lived since October between the departures area and the duty free area of Incheon International Airport, without being able to enter South Korean territory, CNN explains this Saturday.

The five people left Russia after Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilization of Russian reserve forces to fight in Ukraine.

one meal a day

But their applications for refugee status were rejected by the South Korean Ministry of Justice. These applications would not “deserve to be evaluated” because refusing the mobilization order cannot allow them to acquire refugee status, his lawyer explained to the US media.

For Lee Jong-Chan, however, they should benefit from political refugee status since the Russian invasion of Ukraine “is condemned by international law.”

The individuals appealed the ministry’s decision, and several rights groups have called on the government to recognize them as refugees. But while they wait for the progress of the procedure, they are forced to stay at the airport.

Therefore, the five men have been living for more than three months with “one meal a day”, “bread and drinks”. They can shower and wash their clothes by hand, but have “limited access to medical care and no support for their mental health, which is important given their precarious situation,” Lee Jong-Chan said.

Like them, many Russians sought to flee their country after the partial mobilization announced by Vladimir Putin. According to CNN data, more than 200,000 people fled to Georgia, Kazakhstan and the European Union in the week after Moscow’s announcement.
