US ambassador defends dialogue with Russia despite unprecedented tension

The new United States ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, the first woman to hold the position, on Monday defended the dialogue with the Kremlin (Russian Presidency), despite the “unprecedented tension” between the two powers.

“Ambassador Tracy pays special attention to maintaining dialogue between the capitals of our countries, in a period of unprecedented tension,” the US Embassy said on the Telegram digital platform.

Lynne Tracy, who arrived in Moscow last week after being approved by the Senate (upper house of Congress), will also focus her work on US citizens detained on Russian soil and on promoting relations between the Russian and American peoples.

The diplomat was received at the headquarters of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) by the deputy minister, Serguei Ryabkov, to whom she handed over her credentials.

According to the official RIA Novosti agency, Tracy’s visit did not last more than half an hour, after which he left the headquarters of Russian diplomacy without making any statements to the press.

“The head of the US diplomatic mission has been informed that Washington’s current confrontational course is counterproductive and will inevitably have negative consequences,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

The two diplomats discussed the state of bilateral relations, “which have deteriorated dramatically lately because of Washington,” he added.

“The Russian side expects the ambassador to strictly comply with Russian legislation in her activities, respect our rules and practices and remain faithful to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of the country in which she is located,” he also stressed.

In the vicinity of the headquarters of the Russian multinational, several young people who spoke out against the White House policy were waiting for the new US ambassador.

Before receiving the US ambassador, Ryabkov said there was no point in talking to kyiv or its “puppeteers” after the US and its partners had decided to supply Ukraine with tanks and armored vehicles.

Lynne Tracy is the first woman to assume the post of US ambassador to Russia and succeeds John Sullivan, who left Moscow last September after a three-year mission in the country.

Former ambassador to Armenia, Tracy speaks Russian and was the “number two” of the United States diplomatic representation in Moscow between 2014 and 2017.

A career diplomat, he also held the position of “number two” at the US embassy in Turkmenistan and has also worked in Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

She was also Senior Advisor on Russia at the State Department and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central Asia.
