128 billion euros. This is the money spent on alcohol in the homes of the European Union countries during the year 2021, that is, 0.9% of the gross domestic product of the 27 member countries. Data published this Wednesday by Eurostat, the European statistics office.
Among the member countries, not all inhabitants grant the same budget for alcohol. Thus, Latvians spend 5% of their annual consumption on alcoholic beverages, more than Estonians (4.7%) or Poles (3.7%).
Alcohol, 1.8% of the French consumer budget
On the contraryGreeks and Italians spend the least on alcohol (1%) ahead of the Dutch (1.3%) and Spanish (1.4%).
The average expenditure of the French on alcohol represents 1.8% of their consumption budget, that is, the average expenditure on alcohol of European households that are members of the EU.
