Ukraine’s judiciary has so far convicted 25 Russian soldiers of war crimes committed in the country, the prosecutor’s office, Andriy Kostin, said, highlighting that 92 Russian soldiers are charged and another 260 are under investigation.
“The attack on the civilian population is a deliberate strategy of the Russian Federation that includes murder, torture and sexual violence”said Kostin via Telegram’s digital messaging network and quoted by the Ukrinform news portal.
Kostin adds that the accusations registered by Kiev since the beginning of the last Russian invasion, on February 24, 2022, as well as the previous ones: since the annexation of Crimea, in 2014 and the successive offensives in Donbass, should serve as a basis for judgments of the Court of the European Council of Human Rights or the International Court of Justice (United Nations).
The Ukrainian Attorney General also recalls contacts with “Ukraine’s Western allies” with a view to establishing a special court to try war crimes against the country.
The charges relate to Russian military aggression, genocide and war crimes.
According to the Ukriform portal, 39 countries and international institutions are currently investigating testimonies on the ground, or with refugees abroad, about possible crimes committed by Russian forces since last year.
