The US Justice Department accused a Russian of being an “illegal agent” of Russian intelligence in the United States, under a false identity, posing as a Brazilian citizen.

Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, currently serving a sentence in Brazil for fraud, reportedly began acting as a Russian “illegal agent” in Brazil in 2012 under the name Victor Muller Ferreira, after moving to the United States in 2018 to to study a graduate school. from a university in the District of Columbia.

He is also accused of various frauds related to his stay in the United States.

According to the Justice Department, Cherkasov used his university contacts to obtain information on US foreign policy and had contacts with Russian intelligence agents in 2021 and 2022.

In 2022, he tried to get a job at the International Criminal Court in The Hague but was turned down and returned to Brazil where he was eventually arrested for bank fraud related to using a false identity.
