Invasions in Brasilia will be investigated in Congress

The invasion of vandals in the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia, on January 8, will be investigated in a parliamentary committee of inquiry (CPI) expected to be hot and time-consuming in the National Congress, curiously one of the targets of predators. The CPI was an early request from the opposition who the government is responsible for what happened. President Lula da Silva agreed to hold it now, following the resignation, last week, of the minister responsible for its security for negligence. For the government, any statement that exonerates supporters of the predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, is a delusion.

In the beginning, the attacks that caused the partial destruction of public buildings and the degradation and theft of works of art in the buildings were carried out by extremists clad in green and yellow from the camp next to Brasília’s headquarters, shouting slogans such as “election fraud” or “military intervention”, would leave no room for any reading other than that the vandals responsible are Bolsonaro supporters.

However, Bolsonaristas spread on social media the conspiracy theory that the attacks were concocted by the government to blame the opposition, despite the fact that the hundreds arrested in the act were early radical supporters of the previous president. And Bolsonarists in parliament began demanding a CPI to thoroughly investigate the January 8 accountability.

The government’s refusal to accept ownership of the CPI, on the grounds that Congress should focus its efforts on approving essential budgetary measures for the Brazilian people and that such a commission would cause unnecessary wear and tear, fueled conspiracy theories. That exacerbated the resignation of Gonçalves Dias, minister of Lula’s Institutional Security Cabinet, on Friday the 19th: he, Lula’s ally for 30 years, can be seen in videos revealed by CNN Brasil that were hitherto confidential and released to the office of the president circulated on the day of the acts without acting. With this data, the government felt that the CPI was inevitable and began to defend its realization.

“We want to identify those who committed crimes and those who made it happen,” Rogério Marinho, parliamentary leader of the PL, Bolsonaro’s party, told the Senate. For him, the CPI should focus on “do’s and don’ts” on the day of the deeds.

On the government side, Institutional Relations Minister Alexandre Padilha acknowledged that Gonçalves Dias’ images have created “a new political situation” and that now is the time to confront “another ‘flat earthism'” from the opposition . For Padilha, “the country will face yet another absurd conspiracy theory that the victims are responsible for the actions of terrorists, it is a real ‘terraplanismo’, but in the end the CPI will put an end to these theories”, he concluded .

In the press, most opinions seem to be moving in that direction. “Without Bolsonaro, there wouldn’t be January 8,” the newspaper headlined The State of S. Paulo. CPI is a weapon that can and should be used against Bolsonaro Economic value. For the columnist place Poder360 Fernando Molica, “in insisting that the CPI try to place at least part of the responsibility for the January 8 extremist acts on the government, the Bolsonarist base is going for all or nothing”. “The quest to deny what has been seen and proven and to take control of the Planalto has the potential to throw the king defeated in October 2022 off the board and complicate the lives of many allies. Bolsonaristas risk losing the game to lose what they were trying to promote.”, he concludes.

The dispute between the government and the opposition is now to guarantee the presidency, the rapporteurship and the majority of the 32 members of the CPI, which is called the CPMI, including the initial “mixed” as it includes both deputies and senators .

After the establishment of the committee, a step that has already been taken, a deadline opens for the nomination of members by the parties. In the complex correlation of parliamentary forces in the Brazilian Congress, some parties have supporters and opponents of the government among their members, forcing intensive negotiations – according to the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, the government believes they have between 20 and 20 supporters can have. the 32 members of the committee; however, the opposition warns through Rogério Marinho that Lula “will not manipulate the CPI”.

Due to the media coverage of the CPI, both the government and the opposition intend to nominate experienced parliamentarians. The government must convene the trio that led, with dramatic results for Bolsonaro, the Covid CPI, made up of Senators Omar Aziz (PSD), Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede) and Renan Calheiros (MDB). In addition to them, you can mention Deputy André Janones (Avante), a highlight of the last presidential election, by giving up his own candidacy to join Lula’s very aggressive and some fake news on social networks to reflect the modus operandi of Bolsonarism .

The opposition is considering moving forward with Senators Magno Malta (PL), a gospel singer very close to Bolsonaro, Hamilton Mourão (Republicans), former Vice President and Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL), son 03 of the former President, and André Fernandes ( PL), whose eventual participation is considered controversial because he could be accused of being one of the instigators of the attacks.

Soraya Thronicke, of União Brasil, a party sharply divided between support for Lula and Bolsonaro, is an assimilated name for the group that could serve as a tipping point.

Another fight is over the summons to testify: the opposition threatens to call Flávio Dino, the justice minister and face of the fight against criminal acts, to charge him with negligence, and the government warns that some of the most mediatized Bolsonarians parliamentarians may have to go to the stage answer for inciting invasions. Neither Lula nor Bolsonaro, the parties say, are free to be called.
