The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, insisted this Tuesday on the request to the European Union (EU) to start negotiations on the accession of Ukraine, when he received the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Kiev.
“The time has long come to remove this artificial political uncertainty in Ukraine’s relations with the EU,” Zelensky was quoted as saying by the French agency AFP.
“The time has come to make a positive decision on the opening of accession negotiations,” the Ukrainian leader said at a joint press conference with von der Leyen.
The President of the European Commission traveled to kyiv to celebrate Europe Day in the Ukrainian capital, which is celebrated this Tuesday.
Ukraine formally applied to join the EU on February 28, 2022, four days after being invaded by Russia.
In June, EU leaders granted Ukraine candidate country status, which is still pending a timetable for negotiations.
