Portugal expects the new far-right Italian government, headed by Giorgia Meloni, to fulfill all its obligations within the framework of the European Union (EU), Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho said on Tuesday.

“Italy is a democratic country. We recognize all the legitimacy of the Italian people to choose who they want to govern their country and we will work with the Italian government,” said Gomes Cravinho on the sidelines of the release of a solidarity stamp with the Ukrainian people.

“We hope that the Italian government can fulfill all its obligations assumed within the framework of the European Union (EU) and, therefore, we are now waiting to see what concrete decisions the future Italian government will take,” said the Portuguese minister. .

João Gomes Cravinho also underlined that “Italy is an important country in the European context precisely because of its scale and also because of its history.”

Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy (FdI) party won Sunday’s election with 26 percent of the vote, with the coalition she leads a clear majority in parliament, according to final results released today.

Matteo Salvini’s League obtained 8.8% of the votes (compared to 13% in 2018), and Forza Italia, owned by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, 8.1% (14% in 2018), according to Ministry figures. of the Italian interior. The coalition of these three parties and a smaller formation with less than 1% obtained 43.8% of the votes.

These results of the coalition led by Meloni translate into 237 of the 400 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and 115 of the 200 seats in the Senate.

The center-left Democratic Party (PD) was the second most voted, with 19% of the votes in the early legislative elections. Together with his green and leftist allies, he will have 84 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 44 in the Senate.

The 5 Star Movement obtained 15.4% of the votes, giving it 52 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 28 in the Senate. The centrist Azione alliance obtained 7.8% of the vote and will occupy 21 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and nine in the Senate. The remaining seats will be distributed to smaller parties.
