The construction and production of the scenes of the barbieland of the new Barbie movie caused a worldwide shortage of pink paint.
In an interview with Architectural Digest, the film’s production designer Sarah Greenwood explained that Barbie’s “Dream House”, roads and streetlights are “almost entirely fluorescent pink”. Due to the excessive use of this color to bring life to the sets, “the world has run out of pink,” says Greenwood.
As justification, director Greta Gerwig said that “it was important to maintain the childlike aesthetic” of the film.
“I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything to be almost too much,” Gerwig said, adding, “I didn’t want to forget what made me love Barbie as a child.”
According to the director, the design of Barbieland was inspired by the Kaufmann House, located in Palm Springs.
The new Barbie movie hits theaters on July 21 and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The cast also includes Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Helen Mirren, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and Ncuti Gatwa.
