Guinea-Bissau. PAI/Terra Ranka coalition wins parliamentary elections by absolute majority

Plataforma Aliança Inclusiva (PAI) Coalition — Terra Ranka won parliamentary elections in Guinea-Bissau with an absolute majority, taking 54 of the parliament’s 102 deputies, according to preliminary results announced this Thursday by the National Elections Commission (CNE) .

The PAI — Terra Ranka coalition is led by Domingos Simões Pereira, president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which won the 2019 parliamentary elections without a majority with 47 deputies, and also includes the União para achange, the Convergence Democratic Party, the Guinean Democratic Movement and the Social Democratic Party.

“Our message will be very short and very simple. The results of the June 4 parliamentary elections have just been announced and the results are that Guinea-Bissau has won,” said Domingos Simões Pereira.

“Since Guinea-Bissau won and as the PAI-Terra Ranka platform has always promised, we have responsibilities and we celebrate, yes, we celebrate, but we will respect all the children of Guinea, who contributed to these results,” he asked. his supporters to also become leader of the PAIGC.

In his short statement, Domingos Simões Pereira also said that “hope for a new day” began to emerge today.

The preliminary results also indicate that the Movement for Democratic Variety (Madem-G15), led by Braima Camará, won 29 deputies in the National People’s Assembly, two seats more than in 2019.

In third place was the Social Renewal Party (PRS) with 12 deputies, a big drop from the results of the last parliamentary election, when it won 21 seats.

Madem-G15 and PRS have been part of Guinea’s government since 2020, after Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló dismissed Prime Minister Aristides Gomes, who led PAIGC’s executive.

The Guinean Workers’ Party (PTG), founded at the end of 2021 and led by Botche Candé, received six deputies in its election debut.

In the 2019 legislature, Botche Candé was elected deputy to the PRS and took over the Home Affairs and Agriculture portfolios in the government, which has now ceased to function.

The big loser of the parliamentary elections is the United People’s Assembly – Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau, led by outgoing Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam, which won only one deputy in 2019 when she elected five deputies.

Nearly 900,000 Guinean voters were called to the polls on Sunday to elect the new 102 deputies to the National People’s Assembly, which will form the next government after Guinea’s president dissolved parliament in May 2022.

During the election campaign, Umaro Sissoco Embaló reiterated in statements to the press that he will not name Domingos Simões Pereira as prime minister, nor the vice president of the PAIGC, Geraldo Martins.

The various international missions of election observers supervising the election process on Tuesday said Sunday’s elections were peaceful, orderly and well attended.
