Pope spends second quiet night in hospital recovering from surgery

Pope Francis spent a second quiet night at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, recovering from a bowel operation he underwent on Wednesday, the Vatican press office reported Friday.

The Vatican said Francis’ condition is stable and post-operative recovery is considered normal.

The Vatican press office also stated that further medical updates are expected later in the day.

On Thursday, the Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, declared that “the postoperative course seems to be regular,” adding that the pope was on a liquid diet.

The spokesman also said that, on Thursday afternoon, the Pope “received the Eucharist” for the feast of Corpus Christi and that he also made a brief phone call to the mother of a child he baptized in the hospital at the end of March. ., to thank her for the best wishes sent by her family.

The 86-year-old Pope underwent this Wednesday at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome a three-hour intestinal surgery under general anesthesia, which was carried out “without complications”, by a team led by Professor Sergio Alfieri, the same surgeon who he operated on it in July 2021.

Francisco was hospitalized with bronchitis for a few days in March at the Gemelli Hospital.

Francis’ health has been the subject of debate since he made it clear he would be willing to resign if illness prevents him from doing his job, as happened to his predecessor Benedict XVI in 2013.

The Pope has been affected by cataracts, sciatica and osteoarthritis in his right knee that have forced him to use a wheelchair on numerous occasions.

After the Columbus operation, on July 4, 2021, he reacted to the speculation: “I’m still alive, some prelates wanted me to die, they were already preparing the conclave (to choose a successor).”
