The German and English transport ministers announced on Wednesday the creation of a working group to prepare a direct rail link between the United Kingdom and Germany, until now accessible only with correspondence.
In this perspective, questions related to border and security controls “should be mentioned with infrastructure managers and interested rail companies,” he added.
Several operational, regulatory and economic limitations mean that trips are very possible only with correspondence, particularly through Brussels or Paris.
Increase train attraction
“A direct link would greatly facilitate trips and considerably increase train attraction,” according to Patrick Schnieder.
A direct rail link between the two countries “would contribute to the creation of new jobs and strengthen the main commercial connections that constitute the basis of our economic relations with Germany,” according to the minister.
In June, the Eurostar rail operator announced its intention to offer a direct connection between Germany and the United Kingdom for the first time, with an extension of its current network that connects especially London with Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris.
The company plans to serve Frankfurt and Geneva directly in the early 2030s.
