One record chases the other. According to INSEE, in all of 2022, 1,071,900 companies were created, 2% more than in 2021, the year in which the threshold of one million creations was exceeded for the first time.
Last year, however, the growth in the number of companies created slowed down compared to the last six years and in particular compared to 2021 (+16.9%), “the increase observed in most sectors was seen offset by the fall of some sectors that had developed strongly during the health crisis ”, specifies the INSEE.
If they sign their weakest growth (+3%) since 2016, the creation of micro-enterprises (656,400 in 2022) that weigh more than 60% of the group continue to drive the increase in all registrations, well ahead of creations in the form of companies (293,400, +5%). On the contrary, the creation of classic sole proprietorships decreased (122,100, -7%).
Decrease in transport, commerce and accommodation-restaurants
In detail, it is in the sector of specialized scientific and technical activities where business creations were most numerous in 2022 with 187,600 registrations (+15.4%), including 71% under the micro-entrepreneur regime. This is followed by the automobile trade and repair sector (149,800 creations, -13.6%), construction (97,300, +5%) and the administrative and auxiliary services sector (86,600, +23%).
The decrease in company creations in the retail sector “is mainly due to door-to-door sales, whose creations, mostly in the form of traditional sole proprietorships, plummeted 41% (-16,300 creations in one year), and fell to 23,100 in 2022, after reaching a maximum of 48,700 in 2020”, points out the INSEE.
Beyond commerce, the creation of companies plummeted in the transport and storage sector (-34.5%) and fell 4.9% in the accommodation and catering sector.
The number of company creations increased in most regions in 2022: +17.4% in Martinique, +6% in Corsica, +3.5% in Ile-de-France… Due to a less sectoral fabric conducive to the creation of companies, some regions, on the contrary, have seen the number of registrations in their territory decrease. This is the case of Normandy (-1.8%), Hauts-de-France (-1.4%) or Burgundy-Franche-Comté (-1%).
more and more women
In recent years, the average age of business creators has tended to fall. Aged 38 in 2012, she turned 36 last year. Instead, creators under the age of 30 who represented 41% of the total in 2021 are less numerous today (39%).
The proportion of women among business creators tends to increase. In 2022, women represented 45% of the registrations, that is, 2 points more than in 2021.
“This increase is explained by the strength of business creations in certain especially feminized sectors (…) and the decrease in creations in transport and storage, where men are overrepresented”, stresses INSEE, adding that women are the majority in the sectors of “other household services” (77%), human health and social work (73%), industry (52%) and education (52%).
