NATO increases military budget by 12% by 2024

NATO agreed this Wednesday to military budget for 2024which will be 12% higher than this year, and the civil budget, which will increase by 18.2%, the Atlantic Alliance indicated in a statement.

Thus, the military budget will reach 2,030 million euros next year, while the civil budget will reach 438.1 million euros. The allies gave the green light to the accounts at a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s highest decision-making body.

The Alliance civilian budget provides Financing of personnel, operating costs and program expenses. of NATO headquarters and its international staff, according to the statement.

Military accounts cover the operational costs of the headquarters, missions and operations of the transatlantic organization’s command structure around the world. The third major element of the Alliance jointly funded by the allies is the NATO Security Investment Programme, which encompasses “significant investments in construction and command and control systems,” according to the organization.

The budget limit of this program for 2024 is 1.3 billion euros, which represents an increase of 30% compared to 2023. NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana highlighted that increasing and expanding the use of common financing in the organization allows allies to “more effectively address shared security challenges”.

“Common financing demonstrates allied solidarity and collective will. In turbulent times, we need it more than ever,” said the representative, referring to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East (Israel-Hamas).
