A hundred international museums are moved by the “attacks” of proclimate activists

Museum leaders say they are “deeply shocked by the reckless endangerment” of the works in a series of actions organized by environmental activists.

Nearly a hundred international museums said on Thursday they were “deeply shocked” by actions against works of art organized by environmental activists, recalling their role in conservation.

“The activists responsible for these attacks greatly underestimate the fragility of these irreplaceable works,” write these institutions, among which are important international museums such as the Prado in Madrid, the Louvre in Paris or the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Many jobs directed

In recent weeks, climate activists have put their hands, for example, on a Goya painting in Madrid or on the famous serigraphy Campbell’s Soup of Andy Warhol exhibited in Australia, projected tomato soup on the sunflowers by Van Gogh in London, and spread mashed potatoes on a Claude Monet masterpiece in Potsdam, near Berlin.

If the paintings were left unscathed, the incident of the sunflowers resulted in minor damage to the canvas frame.

“Museums are places where a dialogue is established between people of very diverse origins and, therefore, places that contribute to social exchanges”, declared the 92 signatories.

“As a result, the essential functions of the museum – collection, research, mediation and conservation – are more essential and relevant than ever,” they added.
