A “powerful explosion” on Saturday, April 26 in Iran in an important use of the south of the country, at least 281 was injured, according to Iranian state television, which did not immediately give details about the origin of the disaster.
“A powerful explosion occurred on a platform in the port of Shahid Rajai,” said a local official of the port administration, Esmaïl Malekizadeh on television.
This is more than a thousand kilometers south of Tehran, near the great port city of Bandar Abbas.
“The incident is due to the explosion of several containers stored in the Port Shahid Rajai Quay area,” said a local rescue official, Mehrad Hassanzadeh, on state television.
“At the moment, 281 injured have been transferred to medical centers,” said State Television.
One detonation heard more than 10 kilometers
Port Shahid Rajaï is the largest commercial port in Iran, according to the official Irna news agency. More than 70% of Iran’s assets go through this place, which limits with the Ormuz Strait, through which a fifth of the world oil production passes.
State television transmission images that show an important black smoke plume that rises in the sky from the port. The detonation was heard more than 10 kilometers around, according to the same source.
“The crash wave was so strong that most of the port buildings were seriously damaged,” said Tasnim news agency.
The number of employees present at the time of the explosion is not known immediately. Saturday is the first business day of the week in Iran.
