US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “strategic failure”, while Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to “continue systematically” the offensive that began nearly a year ago.
“A year after President Putin attacked Ukraine. It is clear that his war was a strategic failure in every sense,” Blinken said in Athens at the end of a five-day trip to the region.
“Nobody wanted this war. Nobody likes this war. Everyone wants it to end as soon as possible,” Blinken said. “If we let this go unpunished, we will open a Pandora’s box around the world where power is right,” he said.
Blinken’s comments come as Putin delivers a State of the Nation speech in Moscow, blaming the West for the escalating conflict in Ukraine and vowing to continue.
“Step by step, we will carefully and systematically solve the objectives we face,” Putin said ahead of the invasion’s first anniversary.
Blinken attended the safety conference in Munich on Friday before flying to quake-hit Turkey, where he announced $100 million (about €93.8 million) in humanitarian aid.
