The summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, presented as “historical”, finally led to any specific announcement to end the war in Ukraine, caused in 2022 by the Russian invasion. Three days later, another meeting could be decisive: Volodymyr Zelensky will be received at the White House this Monday, August 18.
Six months after the Vilipocia scene of the Ukrainian president who went around the world in the same office, this time European leaders will block Volodymyr Zelensky.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, French president Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and the head of the NATO Mark Routte will accompany him in the office of Donald Trump. With the aim of ending the conflict, guaranteeing Kyiv’s security.
• Towards a sale of Ukrainian territories?
One of the main challenges of the meeting is whether kyiv will have to give up territories, in particular the Ukrainian oriental regions, occupied by the Russian army. After the Trump-Putine summit, the special emissary of the US president, Steve Witkoff, said Russia had made “territorial concessions” with respect to “the five regions” in the east of the country. “There is an important discussion about Donetsk and what will happen there,” added Steve Witkoff on the CNN channel.
In his social network Truth, on the night from Sunday to Monday, Donald Trump excluded that Ukraine recovers the Crimea “given by Obama (12 years ago, without a single opportunity to be fired).”
“The Ukrainian president, Zelensky, can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants, or can continue fighting,” he said.
According to an official who has telephone exchanges between Donald Trump and European leaders who followed the summit in Alaska, the US president supports a Russian proposal that strengthens his presence in eastern Ukraine.
According to this anonymous source of AFP, the Russian president “in fact as a fact that Ukraine leaves the Donbass” and yields this territory that brings together the regions of Donetsk and Lougansk, in eastern Ukraine. It also offers a front gel in the Ukrainian regions of Kherson and Zaporijjia.
For his part, on Sunday, during a press conference with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Ukrainian President had assured that “by the Constitution of Ukraine, it is impossible to leave or transfer territories.”
• What security guarantees for Ukraine?
On Sunday, after the “voluntary coalition” meeting, kyiv’s allied countries, Emmanuel Macron explained that the meeting with Donald Trump was an opportunity “to present a united front between Europeans and Ukrainians”, and ask Americans “to what extent” are ready to contribute to security guarantees offered to UKRAINE in a possible peace agreement.
“We have agreed with solid security guarantees,” said Steve Witkoff after the Trump-Putine summit, adding that these guarantees could “change the situation.”
• An entry into NATO completely excluded
To guarantee the security of Ukraine and avoid a new Russian invasion, one thing is safe: Kyiv will not enter NATO. In his message in Night On Truth Social, Donald Trump reiterated it: “There is no doubt for Ukraine to enter NATO.”
Returning from Alaska, the US president spoke of a solution inspired by article 5 of NATO, but apart from the framework of the alliance considered by Moscow as an existential threat to its borders. Volodymyr Zelensky praised a “historical” decision of the United States, but Europe wants to go further.
According to the Italian Prime Minister, it is about defining a collective security clause that would allow Ukraine to obtain support “from all its partners, including the United States”, in case of a new attack.
